The building was constructed in 1867 according to plans by Johann Jakob Stehlin the Younger as the completion of the ecclesiastical building programme consisting of Elisabethenkirche, parish garden and rectory. In the wider context, it is considered part of the ‘cultural centre’ planned by J.J. Stehlin on the Steinenberg, an urban ensemble that stretched from Barfüsserplatz to the Bankverein, consisting of an art gallery, sculpture hall, music hall, theatre and Steinenschulhaus. The conversion project included the restoration of the façade and roof, the restoration of the prestigious Beletage and the restrained extension of the attic storeys. Each floor is given its own character and the building is characterised by the diversity of rooms and users
